Below is a list of influential, Grammy-winning, groundbreaking trumpet albums. However, it\u2019s not a final list. It\u2019s simply a tiny fraction of what\u2019s out there waiting to be played. If you never listen to trumpet music and simply don\u2019t know how to get started, pick something from here. Whether your taste is latin jazz, classical, orchestral or even pop, you will find something here to throw in your iPod. While you listen, just know that Miles showed up to this recording session with just a fews licks written on a piece of paper.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Arturo Sandoval \u201cHot House\u201d &#8211; Style: Latin Jazz<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have your mind blown by Arturo\u2019s virtuosic solos and crazy amount of band talent. This album won the Latin Jazz Grammy in 1999. My favorite tune? \u201cCuban American Medley&#8221; because it&#8217;s just so much fun!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Brecker Brothers &#8211; \u201cHeavy Metal Be-Bop\u201d &#8211; Style: Jazz-Funk<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funk is usually characterized by electronic sounds, so if that\u2019s your thing AND you like jazz, then press play on this album. The brothers were both known worldwide, won many awards and influenced the funk landscape forever. So get to it and get funky.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Count Basie and His Orchestra \u201cApril in Paris\u201d &#8211; Style: Big Band, Standards<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have an old soul and simply love listening to those 1950\u2019s jazz tunes then this album is a must for you. The Count Basic Orchestra started in 1935 and guess what, it\u2019s still alive today as a \u201cghost band\u201d, which is a band that continues after its leader has passed away.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Allen Vizzutti, Bobby Shew and Vincent DiMartino \u201cTrumpet Summit\u201d &#8211; Style: Commercial, Pops<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three trumpet masters and one live album. All of these guys have propelled jazz forward and played alongside the world\u2019s best instrumentalists and singers.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1523983215266{padding-bottom: 50px !important;}&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Classical&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|font_size:18|text_align:left|color:%232f2933&#8243; google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Playfair%20Display%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal&#8221; el_class=&#8221;text_uppercase letterspacing-1&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1541567195281{margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text font_size=&#8221;16&#8243;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alison Balsom \u201cHaydn &amp; Hummel: Trumpet Concertos\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Style: Classical<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alison Balsom is one of the best trumpet players in modern history. She plays these concertos from the classical repertoire beautifully, with finesse and impeccable technique.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ole Edvard Antonsen &#8211; \u201cFrench Trumpet Concertos\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Style: 19th and 20th Century<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Antonsen is one of the most mind-blowing players out there. His tone is crystal clear, his flexibility is astonishing and don\u2019t even get me started on his multiple tonguing. These French concertos have never sounded so good.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maurice Andre &#8211; \u201cThe Trumpet Shall Sound\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Style: Baroque<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the his best albums (although there were many), truly displaying his unmatched talent. If you enjoy baroque music this is it, and if you don\u2019t, then this is where you start loving it. Maurice left this earth in 2012, but he left us with one of the strongest trumpet legacies of all time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wynton Marsalis &#8211; &#8220;Classic Wynton\u201d &#8211;\u00a0Style: Various Classical<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No list of best trumpet albums is complete without Marsalis. Don\u2019t know where to start? Well you could try track number 20, \u201cFlight of the Bumblebee&#8221;, because c&#8217;mon, we both know you want to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Phil Smith and the New York Philharmonic &#8211; &#8220;The Phil Smith Collection: Trumpet Highlights Vol.1&#8221; &#8211; Style: Orchestral<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this album you can hear highlights of Smith&#8217;s magnificent playing with the NYP, a symphony he played with for 36 years as principal trumpet. He retired in 2013 and is now professor of trumpet at The University of Georgia.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Other&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|font_size:18|text_align:left|color:%232f2933&#8243; google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Playfair%20Display%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal&#8221; el_class=&#8221;text_uppercase letterspacing-1&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1541567199570{margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text font_size=&#8221;16&#8243;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Doc Severinsen &#8211; \u201cTrumpet Spectacular\u201d &#8211; Style: Pops<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cPops\u201d in trumpet playing stands for \u201cpopular\u201d, so when an album features pops music you will hear arrangements of known pieces, like \u201cNapoli\u201d in this album. The track on this albums are all super fun. Start with track 6 \u201cA Carmen Fantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Al Hirt &#8211; \u201cPops Goes the Trumpet\u201d &#8211; Style: Pops<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Al Hirt and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, it really doesn\u2019t get much better than that. That is all!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Canadian Brass &#8211; \u201cTakes Flight\u201d &#8211; Style: Chamber, Brass Quintet<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you like listening to more ensemble than solo music, then you will love the sound of the Canadian Brass, who have been around since 1970. This album here though is fairly new and features some classics such as \u201cLittle Fugue in G Minor\u201d as well as newer pieces like the awesome \u201cKiller Tango.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gileno Santana &amp; Tuniko Goulart &#8211; \u201cInevitavel\u201d &#8211; Style: Bossa Nova, Original<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gileno Santana is a Brazilian trumpet player who plays with a wonderfully hazy sound. His music is truly fun to listen to and I find that I often can\u2019t stop humming the tunes from this album for days. Start with \u201cMalaco\u201d to get a gist of what this album is all about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rafael Mendez &#8211; \u201cThe Legendary Virtuosity of Trumpet Players\u201d &#8211; Style: Pops, Mexican-Style Playing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mendez was a Mexican trumpet player who made the trumpet popular in Hollywood in the 50\u2019s. His rocket-fast double tonguing was unmatched and simply stunning. You will notice he plays with a fast vibrato, much like Mariachi players.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Other players and ensembles you should check out&#8221;
